Pole Barns for RV Storage: Size & Design Considerations

Your RV's been sitting in the driveway with the sun beating down on the roof all summer and snow piling up on it all winter. This means every spring you're on a ladder checking seals you'd rather not have to worry about. Or maybe you're paying a storage lot every month for the privilege of driving across town to get to your own camper.

Both of these scenarios are incredibly inconvenient, and a pole barn for RV storage solves both at once. But the difference between a building that works and one that becomes a daily headache comes down to a handful of numbers you have to get right before anybody breaks ground.

At Hilltop Post Buildings, we've been designing custom post-frame buildings across Central Ohio since 2012, including garages and multi-purpose buildings with tall doors and wide-open bays. Sizing one for an RV isn't complicated, but it is unforgiving. There's no easy fix for a door that's six inches too short.

So let's look at the numbers that really count.

Start With Your RV's Measurements

Before you think about the building at all, you need real measurements of the rig going into it. Some manufacturers include the rooftop air conditioner in their published height, and some don't, and nothing you added after you bought it is in that number at all. So grab a tape measure and write down:

  • Height with everything on top. Rooftop air conditioners, satellite domes, antennas, and solar racks all add inches. Many Class A motorhomes land between 12 and 13.5 feet tall once the AC unit is counted, but measure yours.
  • Length including the extras. Rear ladder, spare tire carrier, bike rack, and hitch can all add to the advertised length, depending on how the manufacturer measures it.
  • Width with the mirrors out. Slide-outs matter for clearance once you're parked, but mirrors are what you're threading through the doorway.

Then add one more item to the list: the RV you might own later. People upgrade, and adding height to a finished building is not a small job.

How Tall the Door (and the Walls) Need to Be

Door height is where most RV storage projects live or die, and it's the dimension people underestimate most often.

A common rule of thumb is 14 feet of door height for a Class A motorhome or a fifth wheel, with 16 feet giving you breathing room for a taller rig or a future upgrade. For width, 12 to 14 feet is typical. You want margin for the mirrors, and for how hard it is to back it in perfectly on the first try.

An overhead door needs room above the opening for the header and track hardware, which means the walls have to be meaningfully taller than the door itself. How much taller depends on the door and track configuration, so ask your builder to spell it out rather than assuming. When two proposals show different sidewall heights, this is often why.

Sizing the Building Around Your Rig

Once the door is settled, the footprint is mostly a question of how you want to use the space around the RV.

A reasonable starting point is your RV's length plus roughly 10 to 15 feet. That gives you room to walk around it, work on it, and store the gear that comes with it: hoses, leveling blocks, and the tote of odds and ends that never quite fits inside.

Width is a bigger decision than it looks. Plenty of folks who start out wanting one RV bay end up wishing they had a shop bay beside it, and adding that width during the original build costs far less than adding it later. Our post on pole barn sizes is a good place to think it through.

And don't plan the building without planning the approach. A perfectly sized barn you can't back into is a problem. Walk the route and look at:

  • Your turning radius coming off the driveway
  • Tree limbs and utility lines along the path
  • Which way the door faces, and whether you'll be backing in blind

The Slab Deserves More Thought Than It Usually Gets

A loaded motorhome puts a lot more weight on a lot less floor than a pickup does, and the slab should reflect that.

A large Class A can weigh well over 20,000 pounds, and most of that lands on a handful of tires. Thickness, reinforcement, and joint placement all matter more here than for a standard garage floor. So does what's underneath, since proper grading and compacted stone are what keep a slab from cracking after a couple of Ohio winters. Pour an apron at the door too, or your front tires will carve a rut in the yard every time you come and go.

This is one reason we'd rather handle the complete project than just drop off a shell. We coordinate the grading, the compacted stone, and the concrete along with the building, so you're not standing in your own driveway listening to two contractors explain that the slab is the other guy's problem.

Design Details That Protect the RV

Getting the RV under a roof is only half the job. These details keep it in good shape once it's in there.

Ventilation. Moisture is the real enemy of a stored RV. On an uninsulated metal roof, warm humid air meeting cold steel condenses on the underside and drips onto whatever is parked below. Vented soffits let cool air in at the eaves, and a ridge vent lets humid air out at the peak.

Insulation. Worth it if you'll work on the RV in cold weather or want the space usable year-round, but less critical if you're just parking. Our guide to pole barn insulation options walks through the choices.

Electrical. Plan for a 30-amp or 50-amp shore power connection to keep batteries maintained while the RV sits. Overhead lighting and well-placed outlets make more difference than people expect.

Nice to have. A spigot for washing, a lean-to for the boat, and a loft for seasonal gear are far easier to include now than later.

A Few Ohio Realities

Building here comes with a few local factors worth planning around.

Materials matter even more when a building is protecting something valuable. We use 26-gauge steel where most builders use 29-gauge, and we use premium treated posts rated to last 50 years in ground contact. Post protection systems that wrap and seal the posts at the ground line are available as an upgrade, and worth asking about when we put your proposal together.

It's the first hard freeze in November. Your RV is inside with the door closed, the tires are out of the mud, and the batteries are on a maintainer. You're not fretting about a tarp blowing off or a storage lot invoice that keeps adding up. It's the freedom of owning your own RV storage, like the freedom of the open roads your RV promised you.
