South Bloomfield is a village in Pickaway County with roots reaching back to the earliest years of Ohio statehood. The community was laid out in the early 1800s on approximately 40 acres divided into 80 lots. Its founders had ambitions for South Bloomfield to become the county seat, although that role ultimately went to Circleville. The community became an important stopping point along the stagecoach route connecting Chillicothe with Franklinton and Columbus. Historical accounts indicate that Hugh Creighton operated an early store and tavern here, while a post office was established around 1810. South Bloomfield was formally incorporated in 1833.
Transportation changes eventually altered the community’s role. The Ohio and Erie Canal passed to the east, and later rail transportation also bypassed the center of the village, diminishing the importance of its stagecoach traffic. South Bloomfield nevertheless endured and eventually developed into a growing community within the Columbus metropolitan area. The 2020 Census recorded 2,143 residents. Today, the village occupies approximately 4.28 square miles and remains closely connected with surrounding Pickaway County communities and the U.S. Route 23 corridor.
